As any major prize-giving event approaches, there’s always an outcry for introducing fresh award types to honor unsung work and fill the hearts of fans with niche passions.
My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing above others. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. But it is an essential concession in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything that year
- Another imaginative release missed out that year
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked that year
- Just some logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles globally maintaining this status for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
